Preventing Drug Relapse

Relapse prevention is probably one of the most important aspects of recovery. The main goal of being in recovery is to stay sober and avoid a relapse. But that is not to say it's a very real possibility and all it takes is one bad day. If I’m not equipped with the proper tools, that one bad day could take me out just like that. I look at my recovery as if I was training for a major sporting event, or big MMA fight. I must work as hard as possible, build myself up, gain knowledge, and make sure I am constantly growing spiritually, mentally, and even physically, so when that bad day, bad moment, or life just happens on life's terms, I am ready to fight. Relapse isn't an option for me, if I give this fight up, I will surely die. Preventing that from happening is vital to my program. Having a sponsor, staying humble, keeping a constant contact with God, a solid connection with my support system, and carrying the message of hope to other addicts are all excellent tools in preventing a relapse. Working the steps honestly, addressing my resentments quickly, and opening up to the people close to me is key. Resentments are the number one offender, they have taken me out time and time again, so tackling them quickly is important. Being aware of my triggers is also a must, helping me stay sharp. And if those triggers arise, I can be prepared. Triggers of any way shape or form can catch me off guard , so being mindful of that, and how to handle them is an important element of my recovery. Working a solid program is the best possible chance I have of having a life beyond my wildest dreams, as they say in the big book. I must not let my program slip, because as soon as I let my guard down, my disease will strike, and I must be ready.
