Laughter in Sobriety
Laughter and having fun in sobriety are essential for recovery. If I didn’t have any fun in sobriety, I probably wouldn’t be clean or sober. Remembering to laugh and to not take life so seriously are an important part of my recovery program. There are times when I need to remind myself that it is ok to enjoy myself, and that I don’t have to live in shame guilt or depression. There are times when I feel guilty for having fun, like I am undeserving of having a good time. Laughter helps me to remember that life is too short to beat myself up about my past mistakes and that I don’t have to live in the wreckage of my past. The first meeting of AA that I attended I found people laughing at their past mistakes and I could completely relate and found humor in it. One thing I have learned is that its ok for me to laugh at myself for the ridiculous things I have done in my addiction as well as my recovery.
