Fixing Cognitive Distortions

I have struggled with distorted thinking as long as I can remember. My thought distortions have caused me a lot of unnecessary anxiety and depression. On multiple occasions distortions in my thinking have falsely convinced me that things are much worse than they really are or vice versa, convincing me that things are not as big of a deal as they were in order to avoid a major life situation. Distorted thinking has caused me to do mental and verbal abuse towards people I love and care deeply about.

There are many cognitive distortions that I used throughout my addiction such as jumping to conclusions, labeling, blaming others. exerting control, mind-reading, or magnifying things. All of these examples have taken a toll on me spiritually, mentally, and emotionally.

Coming back into recovery has helped me begin to learn a more positive way of thinking. I’m beginning to shape my mental focus away from these distortions with the help of God, step work, and my support system. Learning to be aware of this warped way of thinking has helped me develop the important tools to flip the focus in a healthier direction. I can confidently say now that my thought patterns are a lot more clear and directed in the correct manner. I know I will still have moments of distorted thinking but now I’m aware of the signs and can stop the distortion before it takes over my recovery.
